Kenya 2011: Young Ravens

"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

Kenya 2011: More than Football... or Hockey

Canucks move on to the Stanley Cup Final!
I was so excited when I heard the news on a phone call to my Aunt in Toronto. I've been cheering for the Canucks for years, so even in Kenya that news was exciting... and foreign. Ice hockey is a world away here and football (that's soccer to all you North Americans) is the sport of choice. Many children have their favourite team's jersey; Chelsea is popular, there are quite a few Arsenals, a few Liverpools, A.C. Milans, Barcelonas and of course, a sea of Manchester Uniteds.

Kenya 2011: Orphans and Refugees
Posted by: Team Kenya on Wednesday May 25, 2011 | filed under General
This post is difficult to write. Currently, I am sitting on our porch under the equatorial skies. If I look north I can see the big dipper (upside down) and if I look south I can see the southern cross. The air is cool and breezy at night, a stark contrast from the blaze of heat during the day, and I can hear crickets and the squeaks of bats. Those are the only easy descriptions I can give you. Everything else is difficult.

Kenya 2011: Three Men in a Gazebo
Posted by: Team Kenya on Sunday May 22, 2011 | filed under General
Living in Northeastern Kenya has been the most eye opening experience for the three of us.
As I write this I am sitting on a makeshift bench in a corrugated tin 'internet cafe'. The 'internet cafe' is about 10 feet by 10 feet with a single old laptop and a sand floor. This place is so far from Toronto, physically, economically and culturally. To be here on our own, with no one more experienced, adds to the sense of isolation, but the three of us would not have it any other way. We have gone through our ups and downs but God has been teaching us much through this.

Kenya 2011: Birds, Zebras and a Volcano
Posted by: Team Kenya on Tuesday May 10, 2011 | filed under General
We have been in Kenya for just over 24 hours now and all three of us love it already. It's beautiful, we've met great people, we've seen so much and there is still so much to see and learn about. Last night we got in around 8:30 and missionary hosts was there waiting for us at the airport. He took us in his rugged landrover to his welcoming home. The family has been great to us. They are such a friendly, easy-going, joyful people.

So, I thought it would be a good idea to give you all a little introduction to this year's Kenya team. The team consists of three members: Andrew, Ben and Mark . Andrew is leading the team. The picture below shows the eager Kenya-bound Tyndale students. (from left to right: Ben, Andrew, Mark.)

Kenya 2011: What Brings Me to Kenya?
Posted by: Team Kenya on Friday May 6, 2011 | filed under General
After months of preparation, thousands of dollars raised, a couple days of training, much prayer and many meetings we are finally about to leave for Kenya. I find myself thinking of what brought me to this point.

Eastleigh- Day three
Posted by: Team Kenya on Wednesday May 12, 2010 | filed under General
Today was our third day working in Eastleigh with the Iftin program at the local community center. By this time, we've gotten to know the girls' names and a little bit of their stories. Most of our class time today was spent getting to know them better, letting them teach us about Somali and Aromo culture. They loved explaining all their different foods to us (injera, shiro, doro wat, halwa), the many different layers of traditional clothing that they wear under their hijab, their songs and national anthems, and they even gave us a sample of Somali dance.

A little bit of light
Posted by: Team Kenya on Tuesday May 11, 2010 | filed under General
Today was day two of working with the somalie refugees. I love the name of the school IFTIN, it means light and thats what it is to these women. In fact that's what it was to me today as well. After a night of heavy rain this morning was pretty bleak, but after getting there and spending time with these ladies the light started to break through. To most of them IFTIN and learning english is what they see as their way out, their way to get to Canada or America.

Monday Day 5
Posted by: Team Kenya on Monday May 10, 2010 | filed under General
Hello friends!
We had an exciting day as it was really the first day of doing the work we came here to do.
We visited the Eastleigh Community Centre, Iftin, which caters to (mainly) Somali and Etheopian women who are refugees. There they are taught english, basics and then conversation english and it also teaches them trades like pottery and bead making, which they sell and make a small prophet off of. Attached to that are other classrooms which teachers others trades like mechanics, automotive work and house hold work like sweing.
