The Last Day

Thursday was our last day in Camden. It started as usual. The team was split up and we helped out with odd jobs around the Urban Promise campus. Some painted and others organized books. After this we all departed for our last day working with the kids. This was a bittersweet afternoon. It was great working with the kids again but it was sad knowing it was our last day with them. They were all excited to see us and the leaders really appreciated all our help. Through this experience we were all impacted by many things.

I was just in touch w/ the Team and they are on the road home. We look forward to hear more of their stories. There certainly was an excitement about working with the children and youth there.

*Safety and rest on the way home
*A good processing of their experience
*Follow-up on their experience - some have already talked about pursuing local service opportunities
*Two of the team are going on other Tyndale mission trip in the next little while

So with that in mind, I will dedicate this update to talking about how the sort of "busy" you experience at school or work differs from the "busy" you experience in the missions field.

Beauty Among The Chaos

Today was challenging and yet beautiful in so many ways. It was amazing to see how God moves, and leads, and loves in the middle of such great poverty and apparent hopelessness. Hearing stories about lives changed inspired me so much. I felt inspired seeing the evidence of people's God-given dreams turned into real life ministries, such as Urban Trekkers, a program run by Urban Promise. To know that regular everyday people are making a magnificent impact on so many individual lives is magnificent.

Camden: Day Two

Today was our first time working with the kids at Urban Promise. We started the day by going to the food bank and helping out as they needed. Some team members stayed at the Urban Promise school to work with the kids and teachers for the day. After the food bank the team split up and went to three different after school programs. The different after school programs were called camp freedom, grace and faith. Being able to work with the kids was an amazing experience. It was awesome to see how open they were with us and how welcoming they all were.

Camden: The First Day

Upon our arrival we were warmly welcomed into St. Marks. Despite contrary posts we had an excellent first night and each team member had a bed of sorts to sleep on. This morning was our first glimpse of Camden. As we drove through Camden we saw the desperation and poverty of a once thriving city. We arrived at New Beginnings church and entered their gorgeous building that was starting to fall apart. It was encouraging to see a church that appeared dead on the outside be so alive on the inside.

Sunday in Camden

I am sure the students had some difficulty sleeping getting used to an usual setting and sleeping in their sleeping bags on mattresses on the floor. Today they will see Camden in the daylight. They will go to a church and experience worship with the people of the city. Then in the afternoon they will do some sightseeing either in New York City or Philadelphia. There may be groups going in either direction. It is more of a relaxing day before the main work that takes place in the school and after school programs Mon-Thurs.
