Career Planning & Self-Assessment
- In what type of atmosphere do I feel most comfortable; indoor or outdoor, fast-paced office, entrepreneurial, educational institution, etc.?
- Do I prefer to work with people, data, or things?
- What kinds of things have I done in all the phases of my life? (Eg. volunteer work, leisure activities, etc.)
- What skills have I developed (communication, leadership, analytical, etc.)?
- What activities do I enjoy most and how could I incorporate some of those into viable work alternatives?
- What kinds of things do I dislike doing? (If you dislike it now you will probably not learn to like it later.)
Resumé Related Resources
- Don't make your resumé too long: highlight major accomplishments, not job details. Your resumé should not exceed two pages.
- Don't make your resumé too short by giving a checklist of job titles without concise responsibility/duty/achievement descriptions.
- Don't be negative, apologetic or modest when writing your resumé. Remember, a resumé is designed to make you stand out from the crowd, so don't minimize your accomplishments or potential.
- Don't list names and addresses of references unless you have confirmed their willingness to be contacted by several prospective employers. Keep references on a separate piece of paper -not in the actual resumé itself.
- Don't destroy a carefully planned resumé with poor format, font or a sloppy reproduction. Put in the time and effort to a make a good presentation.
- Don't send last year's resumé for this year's job. Update your work experience, educational achievements and objectives.

Keep these tips in mind when preparing for your interview:
- Remember that an interview is a face to face meeting between you and the prospective employer for the purpose of gaining information.
You have a role to play:
a. You want to impress the employer with your abilities, accomplishments, interests and values.
b. You must determine whether the position, company and environment will be satisfying and appropriate to your career goals.
- Before the interview practice answering questions using examples from your experience.
- Identify and build your network.
- Script out a one minute introductory marketing story of your employment history with your three top skills.
- Practice, practice, practice before picking up the phone or sending that email.
- Make five phone calls to get one appointment to discuss your career goals.
- Develop a tracking system to remember who you called and what they said for future use.
