Field Education

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Religious Education program or the Certificate in Christian Studies: Transitions program are required to complete Field Education placements in a ministry setting.

Students may not register for Field Education units in their first semester of studies.

What is Field Education?

Field Education units are non-credit graduation requirements for the BRE degree and Certificate in Christian Studies: Transitions. Field Education involves a placement in a ministry setting in an area of interest to the student. The required units must be completed in order to graduate.


Why does Tyndale require students to do Field Education?

  • To provide the student with ministry opportunities in which he/she may develop some key skills
  • To assist the student in identifying spiritual and character development
  • To allow the student to gain experience in a variety of service settings
  • To give the student an opportunity to reflect on his/her calling in life

How to Find a Placement

Students may find a Field Education placement in one of the following ways:

  • FDED 1020
  • FDED 2010
  • FDED 2020
  • FDED 3010
  • FDED 3020

Parameters

  • Field Education placements may be paid or volunteered
  • Field Education placements may be done at churches or ministry organizations
  • Field Education placements duties must be in accordance with the student's major
  • The student’s faculty advisor must approve the placement and his/her signature is required on the Agreement Form

Length of Commitment

  • Each unit requires a minimum of 48 hours of service in order to pass
  • Students may complete 2 units in one semester (requires 96 hours)
  • Students may complete up to 2 units at any one agency (additional units may be approved by the Centre for Service Learning)
  • Travel time may be counted in the 48 hours (up to 10 hours per unit)
  • The hours must span at least 7 days
  • If the placement spans more than one semester, the student is to register for the unit in the semester in which the placement will be completed
