Opportunity Description
Mission Statement: The Salvation Army, as an international movement is an evangelical branch of the Christian Church.
ITS MESSAGE is based on the Bible; ITS MINISTRY is motivated by love for God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity.
ITS MISSION is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, supply basic human needs, provide personal counseling, and undertake the spiritual and moral regeneration and the physical rehabilitation of persons in need who come within its sphere of influence regardless of race, color, creed, sex or age.
Nature of Work: Cross-cultural, children, youth, seniors, civic engagement, community support, food distribution.
Qualifications:Ability to fully adhere to the mission statement of The Salvation Army; Ability to exercise confidentiality and discretion when dealing with people; Exercise initiative using sound judgment; Willingness to learn and develop; "Can do" attitude and team player; Communication and organizational skills a must.
Responsibilities:
To provide for the clientele
The primary function of volunteers with the Salvation Army York Community Church Community and Family Services is to provide for the food bank clientele. In this all volunteers are expected to follow the Salvation Army mission statement at all times. The pastors, Major Byron and Joy Kean, and the Community and Family Services Worker, are the only individuals with the qualifications and authority to assess the needs of the clientele. Therefore, volunteers are expected to follow all instructions given to them by the fore-mentioned staff. If volunteers have a problem with any instructions, their concerns can be raised with the Staff involved, and/or the other staff, away from the clientele in a confidential and private manner.
To follow guidelines
It is important that volunteers set an example of acceptable performance behaviour to clients who are learning work and social skills. Punctuality and dependability are essential. A volunteer is expected to inform the supervisor of any anticipated absence.
To treat individuals with respect
Clients and staff are all unique persons who deserve to be dealt with and spoken to in a respectful manner. Volunteers may come into contact with persons of different beliefs, lifestyles and cultures from their own, and it is essential that a volunteer respect the rights of other individuals. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to be polite and courteous to program recipients, and in all circumstances it is the responsibility of staff to treat the volunteer with fairness and respect.
Time Commitment: At your availability - Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and again between 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Additional Info: This opportunity is ongoing and is accessible by TTC. An interview is required and a travel stipend is negotiable.
