Supporting those with mental health issues should be a priority within our faith communities. Too many of us understand little about mental health and how to help those who are struggling with mental health issues. If you are someone who wishes to understand more about this topic and has a desire to help others in need, then this symposium is for you. Sheila Stevens, as the Director of Tyndale Counselling Services, will introduce the four main presentations, and two personal stories.
Dr. Victor Shepherd will address the myths and stigma of mental illness from a pastor’s perspective, followed by Dr. Alan Fung, presenting his views on treatment and recovery, from a psychiatrist’s standpoint. Purple Yip will discuss family and friends’ roles during recovery, while Dr. T.Y. Wong will describe his church’s supportive ministry, which works with those in recovery. Then, Ellen Richardson and Patricia Pezzack will share their experiences. Afterward, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions during the panel discussion facilitated by Adrianne Sequeira.
