Summer is just around the corner and now is as good as time as any to start thinking up ways to encourage our young to read.

What better way to do so than by getting the young people to go the “Book Adventure” website maintained and created by Sylvan Learning. This website allows children to create their own book lists from over 7,000 titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they read in order to earn points and prizes for their literary endeavors.

Teachers can also create their own class site where students can track their reading lists on personal book pages. Teachers may also to visit the teacher’s lounge section of the website and check out the vast webliography of free teacher resources and online teaching materials.

Parents interested in enrolling their kids in the annual TD Summer Reading Club may also find this resource useful for motivating the young people to read.

While you’re at it be sure to visit the Education Library and take out one of our many books contained in our extensive children’s literature collection.

Quiet Study Space at the Education Library

Are you looking for a quiet place to study?

You know, a special place you need to go where you won’t get bother by those people you call “friends” that always want to go out when you’re writing THAT paper! The one God’s punishing you with for all those times you slept in “Survey of New Testament” class? Maybe you’re the type who needs a “Maxwell Smart Cone of Silence” to cover you when those whispers from the stacks area seem to drill into the back of your head!

If that’s why not take a trip to the Education Library during the upcoming exam period. There are new study carrels in our quiet stacks area and a quiet study room that you can sign up for at 1 hour intervals. While you’re at it why not check out a movie from our AV collection or one of our children’s books that you can treat yourself with once the crazy study period is up?

You’ll be thankful that you did.

The Learning Centre for Teachers section on the Library and Archives Canada website contains a wealth of online educational material that users can download for free. Users may choose from a selection of activity files, lesson plans, quizzes, tutorials and other valuable material that can be used to teach social sciences, mathematics, visual arts and more. The website is very user-friendly. There is a search engine that allows you to search the online material by keyword, title, subject, topic or grade. The resources have been developed for teachers and students from kindergarten through grade 12.

Teachers and teacher candidates should bare in mind that the age-appropriateness of some resources may require some interpretation due to the differences in curricula across Canada.
