Kevin QuastIt is with a deep sense of sorrow and loss that we announce the passing of Dr. Kevin Bruce Quast on May 25, 2017, at the age of 59.

Kevin arrived in 1984 at what was then OTS as part of a wave of faculty hired as the seminary was rapidly expanding. He embodied the new vision for the school. Born and raised in Alberta, he had studied in Edmonton and in Nova Scotia and then completed his doctoral work in Toronto. Raised and educated in Canada, Kevin carried a vision for the nation.

Kevin is remembered for his wonderful combination of scholarship and teaching. His imaginative and creative classroom style helped to open up a much deeper engagement of Scripture. He had the ability to nurture a collegial atmosphere in the classroom, generating rich and fruitful discussion. He was simply known to all as Kevin, and the word which best describes him is simply, mentor. Kevin was also an accomplished and prodigious writer, at both the academic and popular levels. His bestselling books Reading the Gospel of John and Reading the Corinthian Correspondence were models of this commitment to taking rigorous academic research and making it accessible for the church. While in Toronto, Kevin was also a regular speaker and preacher, serving a number of congregations. He would always bring a rich integration of scholarship, love for the church and life experience which, in turn, enriched his teaching.

After leaving Tyndale in 1996 for Edmonton, Kevin continued as a part of the Tyndale community serving in an adjunct capacity for many years. Kevin will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue on for his life was key to forming the ethos that makes what Tyndale University College and Seminary is today.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Baptist Church, Sherwood Park, AB. Memorial donations in Kevin’s honour may be made to The Mustard Seed, Edmonton, AB, www.theseed.ca.
