Cultivate 2017 - Schedule

Saturday, September 2

11 am – Tyndale University College campus officially opens to all new students.
11 am to 2 pm – Welcome and Check-in (Admissions Entrance)
All new students are invited to complete a simple check-in process (follow the signs). Those students in residence are also invited to move in and meet their Resident Advisors. If you’re a commuter student, we want you here no later than 1:45 pm. You are welcome to come earlier if you want a tour or you’re up for a game of basketball!
11 am to 2 pm – Drop-in activities and tours
Take a tour of the campus, join in some pick-up sports/games in the gym or around campus. Wander the campus, check out the Bookstore, or relax in the Student Commons.
2 pm – Family Reception (Kimmerle Hall)
All parents of first year students are invited to attend this important hour with members of the Student Development team. There will be opportunities to ask questions and to share your hopes and dreams with one another.
2 pm – Hall Meetings for Residential students (Assigned rooms) 
Your first gathering as a residence hall! This meetings is required for all first year students living on campus. Hall meetings will be explained to you by your RA.
2 pm – Commuter Student Meeting (Room G310)
Join other commuting students for a brief introduction and information session, then head over together to the Welcome BBQ.
2 pm – International students and TCK students Meeting (Room CH303)
If you’re an international student or “Third Culture Kid” and starting your studies this fall at Tyndale U, please join us for a short information session with James Brooks, our International Students Coordinator, our student worker, and some student leaders.
3:30 pm to 4:45 pm – Welcome BBQ – sponsored by ILC* (Front Quad)
There is a BBQ in the Quad for all new students and their families (first three tickets are free; starting with the fourth meal ticket, it’s only $5.00 per ticket). It’s a good time to have a bite to eat and meet new friends and student leaders.
5 pm – The Tyndale Blessing (The Chapel)
Just before families leave, join us for a meaningful and rich celebration in our beautiful chapel. Sing a couple of songs, hear some stories, and pray together, write a note to your student, and celebrate as the new school year begins.
5:45 pm – A Time to Say Goodbye
It’s time for parents and families to head home. But it’s not forever; we hope you’ll visit the campus through the year for events and activities!
6:30 pm – CULTIVATE 2017
All first-year students will gather in the Chapel to be sorted into Houses.

Welcome to Cultivate 2017 and Class Photo (The Chapel)

Welcome to Tyndale U! In your respective Houses, you will join other new students in the Chapel to meet the rest of the Class of 2021. This time will be a chance to get to know us and each other while having a great time. And you’ll hear all about the Ling Award for the top House and how to earn points for your House during Cultivate 2017 and through the year!

8 pm – Courtyard Eats* (Library Courtyard)
Join us in one of our beautiful courtyard for some sweet music and treats. It’s an informal time to chill, chat, and enjoy your first day at Tyndale U.
9:30 pm – The Fine Print (Residence Halls)
This is geared for our residents. It’s a quick, tongue-in-cheek look at some of the standards and expectations of Tyndale residential students.

Sunday, September 3

Morning – Attend a local congregation for worship
Residential students: you can join some of our student leaders as they walk over to Bayview Glen Church for the 10:00 am service. Or maybe you’d like to find another congregation. The choice is yours but we hope you’ll attend!
12:30 pm – Free lunch for all new students at Tyndale U* (Dining Hall) 
After returning to campus from church at a local congregation in the Toronto area, join us for a special treat – Sunday Lunch on campus!
2 pm – Tyndale U House Challenge (campus fields)
Join your House for our annual Tyndale U House Challenge! Wear old clothes (but of your House colours) and old shoes (shoes must be either sneakers or sandals that fasten and do not slip off) – you might get a little wet and dirty! You’ll compete for the coveted House Challenge Cup and earn points for the Ling House Award are given at this event for team spirit so it’s important that everyone attends.
5:30 pm – Dinner – sponsored by your House Council* (Dining Hall)
After an afternoon of activity and competition, it’s time to chow down on some great food.
7:30 pm – “Sanctuary” (The Chapel)
Most Sunday evenings through the academic year Tyndale offers a student-led chapel service on Sundays with excellent music, reflective prayer, inspiring speakers, and great fellowship. Let’s start the year off right…join us on our first Sunday together.

Monday, September 4

11:30 pm to 4 pm – Toronto Downtown Adventure (Meet in the Dining Hall)
It’s time to explore “Toronto the Good” We’ll head down to Dundas Square on the TTC (bus and subway) where you can set off for different adventures around Toronto. You can check out the world famous Eaton Centre. Or maybe you’ll wander over to Kensington Market and Chinatown to take in the sights and smells. Or perhaps you’ll head down to the St. Lawrence Market area and check out the coffee shops and boutiques. Or what about the Entertainment District and Queen Street – that might draw you in. There are plenty of opportunities for you to see Toronto at its finest.
6 pm  – Dinner^
You can grab a bite at the Dining Hall on campus and check out ILC’s offerings and perhaps have something to eat downtown before heading back to Tyndale U. Either way, dinner’s on your own.
7 pm – Pick-up Ultimate Frisbee (Soccer pitch)
Come join your classmates for a little Ultimate. All are welcome.
8:30 pm – Monday Night at the Movies (Alumni Hall)
We’ll be featuring a flick that we’re sure you’ll want to take in while munching on popcorn.

Tuesday, September 5

9:30 am – “University Studies in a Christian Perspective”: your first INDS 1013 class with Professor Reynolds, Dr. Smith, Dean Sweetman, and guests (The Chapel)
Join your three instructors and their guests for this required session of the “University Studies in a Christian Perspective” course. During this time, we’ll go over the syllabus, explain the purpose of the course, and have you meet other important academic staff.
11:15 am – Food Drive Flyer Delivery (Meet in Chapel)
There’s lots of ways to reach out to our neighborhood and help people without much. We believe a holistic Tyndale university experience includes serving. Join your House in delivering food drive invitations to your route in our Willowdale/North York neighbourhood. Pay attention because you will be returning to this route on Friday evening to collect bags and bags of food.  And here’s an incentive, just by showing up to help, you earn House points for your House!
12:30 pm – Lunch Break^ (Dining Hall or Lamp Post)
Grab some nutrition at either the Dining Hall or Lamp Post Café or bring your own lunch with you and eat with someone you haven’t met yet!
1:30 pm – Transfer student meeting (CH 303)
We know that several of you will be joining the Tyndale U community from other post-secondary institutions and we want to make sure you feel welcomed and have your questions answered. Join us for a time with other transfer students and student leaders.
1:30 pm – House Coffee Break and Library Tours* (Assigned rooms)
Enjoy a cookie and a cup of coffee/tea with your House and then check out the Horsey Library.
2:30 pm – The Academic Life of a Student at Tyndale U (The Chapel)
Join Dr. Barry Smith (VP Academic) and his faculty for an important and informative session. In this session you’ll be introduced to your professors and hear about your courses and what to expect in your different classes. You’ll also learn about academic protocol and expectations. 
4:15 pm – Counselling Services Workshop (Kimmerle Hall)
Tyndale’s Counselling Services Centre will offer a workshop that you will find helpful as you begin your studies at Tyndale. And as an added bonus, the workshop that you attend will count toward one of your Praxis Reports for the University Studies course!
6:30 pm – Cultivate 2017 Banquet* (Commons Patio)
Classes start tomorrow so let’s celebrate the end of our Welcome Days with a celebration banquet. You'll be amazed by the location and the food promises to be delicious and our President, Dr. Gary Nelson will bring words of challenge and encouragement. You won’t want to miss it!

Wednesday, September 6

This lunch is for all Tyndale U undergraduate students and faculty to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year. All this for only $2.00!

Thursday, September 7

Regular Class Schedule Continues
11:15 am to 12:45 pm – Centre for Academic Excellence Workshop (Assigned room)
The Centre for Academic Excellence will offer another workshop during this break period. And just like the one on Tuesday, this workshop will also count toward one of your Praxis Reports for the University Studies course! 
6:30 pm – Pick-up Floor Hockey (SJMP gym)
A long tradition at Tyndale, floor hockey brings out the best in competition and comradery. Join us for a game in our gym. All are welcome!

Friday, September 8

Regular Class Schedule Continues
8:15 am to 11:05 am – INDS 1013: University Studies in a Christian Perspective class (Assigned rooms)
All students will meet in designated spaces around campus at 8:15 am for House Groups with their House Group Leaders (HGLs). Then around 9:45 am, the class will gather in the Chapel for the plenary session. Week one: the search for meaning and community at Tyndale U.
5 pm to 6:30 pm – Food Drive for the North York Harvest Food Bank (Meet in Student Commons)
House groups will collect food along their designated routes in the Willowdale community. Residents have been notified that you are coming. This is a great opportunity for new students to introduce themselves to the surrounding community. It’d be great for you to wear your House or Tyndale T for the event.  Best part: you’re doing something for the people in our community AND earning House points too! 

Saturday, September 9

4 pm – Toronto Blue Jays versus the Detroit Tigers (Rogers Centre)
“Tickets, tickets…who’s got tickets?” We do and we want you to have one and join us for an afternoon at the ball park. We hope the game will be an important one as our home town boys of summer take on the rival Detroit Tigers.

Sunday, September 10

Enjoy a relaxing Sunday and check out a new church in the neighbourhood! There are many to choose from. Connect with a returning student and go with them.

Tuesday, September 12

11:15 am – Fall Commencement Chapel (The Chapel)
All new Tyndale U students will be asked to gather in the Student Commons ahead of the Commencement service to sign the Tyndale Registry and then process together for our first formal service of the year. While the service is quite traditional, the pomp and circumstance is a sight to behold and God always shows up when two or three are gathered in His name!
10 pm – Residence Hall Meeting (The Chapel)
All residential students are required to attend this first meeting of the year. Lots of information and a few laughs too!

Thursday, September 14

11:15 am to 12:30 pm – “The Feast of Tables” (E200 Hallway)
Upper class students have used textbooks to sell and you want to buy them at discounted prices…right? Come out today and we’ll provide the chance for exchange. As well, Tyndale U has a number of clubs and services that students may join or take part in. This will be a perfect time to see what opportunities there are at Tyndale U and to ask questions on how to become involved. Sign up and participate.

Friday, September 15

All Day – TIFF 2017 (Cinemas and Film Houses around the city)
If you’re a film buff, you might like to take in a movie or two during the internationally renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This Friday is the last weekend of the Festival.

Retreats for our Frosh at Tyndale U has been a tradition for almost 20 years. They’re times away in the splendor of God’s creation when we can unwind, learn more about ourselves and our God, enjoy relationships and great food, and just be. You won’t want to miss it. We’ll pick up a “box lunch”, pack up the buses, and leave for The Retreat '17 at the beautiful Muskoka Bible Centre near Huntsville.

7 pm – Arrive at MBC 
Finally at MBC, we’ll get you into your rooms and ready for an evening of activities, inspiration, and fun!
7:45 pm – Devotions and Worship (The Chapel)
This weekend we’re going to continue thinking about what it means to be cultivated in Christ. The conversation continues with Dr. Barry Smith, our Academic Dean, sharing a reflection with us. There will also be great music with our band. It’ll be a fantastic way to start the weekend.
9 pm – House Groups (Assigned areas around the Centre)
Houses will meet together at different times through the weekend. These times will be led by your HL and HGLs and will include prayer, dialogue, and practice (we’ll tell you more about the “practice” part in a sec.).
10:15 pm – Friday Night Live (The Chapel)
We’ve got a mystery activity planned by our House Council Program Chairs and you won’t want to miss it!
11:30 pm – Late Night Session (Assigned room)
Not ready to turn-in yet? Why don’t you join us for a conversation about “cultivating” life with peers, student leaders, and Student Development staff. It won’t be long but it’ll be worthwhile.

MBC is famous for their amazing meals. Breakfast is the first. Get your protein fix and carbo load for a full day of activities.

Some upper year students reflect on what it means to them to flourish at Tyndale. Questions encouraged!

Friends of Tyndale U will provide practical counsel on what it means to them for Tyndale students to thrive during this season of life.

Remember we talked about “practice”? Well here’s your chance. Each House will present, in their own inimitable way, a drama or dance or sketch (or all three!) on a topic that we’ll tell you about during Welcome Days in early September. The presentations will be about 15 to 20 minutes long and happen later this evening. Huge House points will be up for grabs.
