Spring & Summer 2012

Summer School Linguistics Program at Tyndale Spring/Summer School

Are you preparing to go and live in a different culture, and learn to speak a new language? Do you want to spend the summer with some seasoned missionary-scholars (with experience in Canada, Africa, India, Jamaica …) and explore the importance of understanding language for mission effectiveness?

Tyndale University College offers in some years the Summer Linguistics Program, in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada. This summer program is designed to give outgoing missionaries / NGO workers a grounding in basic linguistic knowledge and skills. THIS PROGRAM WILL NOT BE OFFERED IN 2012.

Say ɑɣɑðə! A Four Course feast ...

  • You will learn the how to recognize, pronounce, and write down many of the strange and beautiful sounds in the languages of the world in Phonetics (LING 2013).
  • You will study how one can devise an efficient orthography for writing (and reading) any language based on analyzing the basic sound units in the language in Phonology (LING 2033).
  • You will acquire tools to analyze and understand the grammar of any language in Grammatical Analysis (LING 2043).
  • In Language and Society (LING 3013), you will learn how to observe and recognize the importance of language attitudes, bilingualism, dialect differences, and government language policies for any language situation you find yourself in.

Ready, Set, Go! To ends of the world …

This training will help you get ready to learn any language (written or unwritten) and will foster knowledge, skills and attitudes that will facilitate language learning even where there are no books or teachers. This training can help transform language students into self-directed language learners. This is a great way to explore your abilities to work with and analyze language from a variety of perspectives. The training can be applied to Bible Translation, to learning written / unwritten languages, or to International Development (ID) and Literacy work with various language communities. The courses can be taken individually or as a ‘set’ for University undergraduate credit toward a BA degree or they can be taken as an audit.
