LOOKING AHEAD: Future 2010 ESCM Gatherings
The 2010 ESCM Committee members are pleased to announce that next year’s ESCM monthly, first-Wednesday-of-month Gatherings will provide ample opportunities for challenging learning, fellowship, networking, and worship and prayer around the theme, "Recovering Forgotten Ways".
2010 Theme — Recovering Forgotten Ways: Lessons from the Early Church to Reactivate Today’s Church Life and Mission
The theme comes from the title of Alan Hirsch’s book, The Forgotten Ways: Reactivating the Missional Church. The topics for each month’s brief introduction and small group discussions follow the chapters in Hirsch’s book. Our discussions will be rich. Past 2010 Meetings:
January 6 - "Launching the New Year in Prayer & Mission", in 2010. Steve led us through a meaningful Lectio Divina from John 1 and Phil. 2:5-11.
February 3 — Setting the Scene for Recovering Forgotten Ways
- What about the" cultural distance" between today’s churches & the majority of population?
- Doing church: how do we do it today? Always done this way? Other ways to do church?
- If time allows, please read the introduction and Ch. 1 of "The Forgotten Ways: Reactivating the Missional Church" for discussion.
March 3 -- Jesus is LORD
- What does church look like when God & world are viewed as totally separate?
- Are we becoming dualistic? Does separating social, spiritual, physical, emotional aspects make us dualistic?
April 7 — Combined ESCM & TCEM Meeting: Celebrate Urbana 09 & Consider Disciple-Making
-Celebrate what God did in our communities with the Urbana 09 Global Missions Conference.
-Topic: Disciple-Making — What is it really about? Thinking our way into a new way of Acting OR Acting our way into a new way of Thinking
"Like the famous Tim Horton’s vocabulary of "double-double," our Multicultural Context is really double-double intercultural. 1) Most of our Chinese churches, with our Cantonese-, Mandarin-, and English-speaking congregations, involve leaders and members in intercultural relationships and communication. 2) Our Chinese churches are set in the multicultural mosaic of the larger Canadian context, where Chinese church members rub shoulders with co-workers and neighbours from a diversity of ethnic/cultural backgrounds. How are we discipling our people to carry on the mission of Jesus in the reality of the multicultural (or intercultural) context? Can leaders and church members develop in intercultural competency?"
We will also have a brief 5-minute Urbana 09 report, as it has been a tool for intercultural exposure that the Chinese Churches in the GTA has made use of.
May 5th — Incarnational 4 P's (Presence, Proximity, Powerlessness, & Proclamation)
* Where did our Ecclesiology come from? The Acts 2 church?
* What happens when "church" follows mission (who Jesus is and what he did)?
June 2 — Discipleship
* Rev. Kai Mark will be sharing with us and leading us into a discussion time.
July 7, 10 am-12:30 pm - Physical Walk/Spiritual Walk.
Let's come out and enjoy a time of fellowship with God and brothers/sisters in nature! Dr. Daniel L. Wong will be leading us walk and reflect. Please see details below.
"Most Christian workers are in desperate need of exercise. Let us take a walk together and also reflect on our spiritual walk. We will meet at 10 a.m. in the parking lot for the trail head of the Oak Ridges Corridor Park Trail that is just east of William Bond Park on the same south side of Old Colony Road in Richmond Hill. Old Colony Road is running east and west and found turning left off Bayview Road north of Stouffville Road. The trail is about a total of 5 km, 2.5 there and back. Pack your lunch, water, snacks, hat and suntan lotion. There are only outhouses nearby at the William Bond Park."
[Please see http://www.everytrail.com/fullscreen.php?trip_id=451428. It's just a reference that was found on the internet. We'll gather at where the "END" sign is and that's pretty much the route of the walk. You could also see the pdf file for the map.]
A lunch is available to be brought for you for about $5 if you respond by Friday, July 2nd. If you are attending this walk (and if you'd also like a $5-lunch), let us know by email to ESCM @ escmgta@gmail.com.
Here are some pre-walk questions and verses that you may consider:
1. Do I regular incorporate exercise into my life? In what ways?
2. How is my spiritual walk?
3. What do I expect from this Nature Walk/Spiritual Walk?
Some verses to consider:
Micah 6:8 (NIV)
"He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Ephesians 4:1-3 (NASB)
"Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,3being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

June 3, "360 Degree Leadership", by Rev. Dr. Ted Tham, based on Bill Hybel's book, "Courageous Leadership."
Are you a 360 Degree Leader? 360-degree Leaders don't just direct their gift of leadership south, to the people under their care. They also learn to lead north by influencing those with authority over them, and to lead east and west by impacting their peers. But most importantly, they learn how to keep the compass needle centred by leading themselves-by keeping their own lives in tune so they can provide maximum direction for others. Notes Click here
