We often forget that Jesus and all of his first followers were Jews. First-century Christians understood their Lord within the story and the thought-world of Judaism. In this course we will explore that ancient Jewish world through its literature, through the eyes of "pagan" authors, and through the archaeological remains left behind by Jewish communities. All along the way we will ask how our growing familiarity with this Jewish world deepens our understanding of the New Testament and its universal message.
