John identifies at least six of Jesus' great acts of power as "signs" (σεμεία), events which can unveil or point to Jesus' true identity. Although there is debate about the identification of a seventh "sign" in the gospel, I agree with those who think John presents Jesus' resurrection as the final and greatest "sign."
| Turning water to wine | 2:1-11 (see 2:11) |
| Healing the royal official’s son | 4:46-54 (see 4:54) |
| Healing the lame man | 5:2-9 (see 6:2) |
| Feeding the multitude | 6:1-14 (see 6:14) |
| Healing the blind man | 9:1-41 (see 9:16) |
| Raising of Lazarus | 11:1-44 (see 11:47) |
| The Resurrection | (see 2:18-22) |
At seven points in John's Gospel we find Jesus making declarations about his identity using the formula "I am . . ." (ἐγω εἴμι). John likely intends this formula to recall the divine name revealed to Moses in his encounter at the burning bush (Exod 3:13-15).
