Residence Life Coordinator (Part-time, 9 months)

Position Description

The Residence Life Coordinator is one of the on-site point of contact persons for residents, and contributes to the leadership and oversight to Tyndale residents and provides leadership for its student-led residence life staff at Tyndale University.  This position is responsible for developing and maintaining an environment which is safe and conducive to the overall development of students and to the leadership and spiritual development of the residence life team. 

Primary Responsibilities

Residence Life, Management & Administration

  • Implement best practices for programming for residence life at Tyndale
  • Promote a healthy and strong residential environment conducive to the overall development of students
  • Assist in developing and enforcing residence policies and procedures, updating the Residence Handbook and communicating changes as required
  • Respond as a first measure to difficult residential issues
  • Contribute to the development of policy and procedures for a Health & Safety Committee in residence with the RL team
  • Collaborate with the Campus Operations Manager on issues of health & safety as relates to Residence
  • Manage resident records/files, residence website, and the residence database
  • Coordinate and oversee residence events/meetings as deemed necessary
  • Approve all residence events

Residence Facility

  • Assist with move-in/move-out procedures for all residents
  • Assist with the management of all residence keys & security cards, the student mailbox lists & keys
  • Organize and facilitate regular inspections of the residence from the rooms to lounge spaces and bathrooms
  • Work closely with Conference and Campus Services to ensure all issues and procedures pertaining to facilities in residence are being dealt with (cleanliness, lost keys, food services)
  • Work with RL team to schedule and ensure maintenance and cleaning of the residence lounges and kitchens

Supervision & Leadership of Residence Life (RL) Team

  • Provide leadership, direction, feedback, and mentoring to the RL team, ensuring positive team dynamics and follow through of responsibilities
  • Foster opportunities for RL team building and development
  • Approve and oversee RL team events
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Student Life plan, prepare, and assist with training, leadership orientation and fall leadership week for the new RL team
  • Plan and lead the RL Team meetings during fall and winter semesters
  • Nurture opportunities for prayer and spiritual development for the RL team
  • Conduct regular planning meetings with RA’s and one-on-one accountability meetings

Security and Emergency Response

  • 24-hour emergency on-call for residence (Delegated to RL team as necessary)
  • Coordinate appropriate RA security roles and rounds
  • In conjunction with Campus Operations, ensure first aid as well as health and safety standards, policies and procedures are maintained 

Student Development and Campus Involvement

  • Communication of and advocacy for resident issues
  • Attend and participate in Student Development department meetings, conferences, etc. as required
  • Work collaboratively as a team member of Student Development to increase awareness of Student Development and ensure best practice models are applied to Tyndale’s Residence Life philosophy
  • Work collaboratively as a team member on other matters that arise as determined by the Dean of Student Life.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate degree (Graduate degree preferred)
  • First Aid Training/CPR
  • Mental Health First Aid Training (preferred)
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license and vehicle

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years Residential experience in a university/college residence hall
  • Residential leadership experience (preferred)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor, motivate, and disciple students

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Must live in residence during the employment contract
  • Flexibility to work evenings/nights and weekends and be on-call
  • Moderate – high level of stress. May result from emergency/security situations, personnel issues and disciplinary measures as required
