Tyndale is a Christian university that prepares leaders for work in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, ministry and the global mission of the church. Tyndale offers fully accredited programs in a wide range of disciplines at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently, there are over 1,600 students representing over 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 13,000 alumni. Founded in 1894, Tyndale is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Position Description

Inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) are contemporary terms for honouring our unique differences as human beings and striving for unity. The purpose of the IDEA Department is to support the university in discerning and championing a faith-based response to the complexities of difference and unity experienced in Canada today. The incumbent serves as a member of the University Cabinet.

This is a newly established department. Consequently, year 1 is expected to focus on clarifying the structure for the department that will best serve the University and confirming and prioritizing the establishment and staffing of additional positions for the department.

Primary Responsibilities

The Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) has the responsibility to refine and enrich Tyndale University’s vision for a culture of diversity and inclusion that is faithful to Tyndale’s mission, values and strategic priorities. More specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing and influencing institutional policies and processes, pioneering university-wide partnerships for the advancement of IDEA, and effectively serving the Tyndale community. Familiarity with HR processes, academic culture and planning, student life and frontline services (e.g. counselling) is essential for establishing cross-functional relationships across the university and with relevant external stakeholders.

Leadership and Administration

  • Establish and develop the IDEA department with goals and priorities that are in alignment with the mission, values and strategic priorities of the university.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and strategic direction to department employees, including performance management.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, so as to maximize outcomes while maintaining efficiencies.
  • Encourage, guide and engage with the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council and other groups as may be established, seeking input as priorities are developed and responding to areas of concern that are brought forward.
  • Nurture, develop and implement awareness and practices that focus on the attraction, retention and development of students, staff and faculty with diverse perspectives and experiences through cross-departmental partnership.
  • Develop, manage, and track IDEA standards, processes, and protocols to foster consistent practices across the institution. 
  • Promote and develop strategies to address and resolve practices and/or policy that may impede a culture of diversity and inclusion.
  • Chair and/or serve on committees as assigned.
  • Serve as a member of Cabinet, enabling the President, the Board of Governors, and Cabinet to make timely, informed, responsible, and creative decisions that optimize the generation, development and use of institutional resources (financial, physical, and human).

Community Participation and Development

  • Be visible as an active participant in the life and experience of the university community.
  • Build a thorough understanding and awareness of Tyndale University specifically, and Christian higher education generally, in order to effectively serve the people and functions of the university.
  • Create and sustain the infrastructure and environment required to facilitate, nurture, and support departmental excellence.
  • Represent the President, as requested.
  • Lead special strategic projects, working groups and research at the President’s direction.
  • Establish and nurture collegial connections with other academic institutions and organizations in both the public and private sectors.
  • Elevate the visibility and image of Tyndale through public speaking, networking and constituency relations, as agreed with the President.
  • Function as a liaison to relevant external agencies and governance bodies.

Position Qualifications


Master’s degree in a relevant field


  • 13 to 15 years related experience
  • A track record of effective and visionary leadership, including change management, in a similar professional field
  • An accomplished leader with proven experience with budgeting and human resource-related matters
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegial decision-making processes
  • Experience in higher education is preferred 
  • Subject matter expert in inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility, imparting a deep understanding of best practices
  • Substantial leadership experience creating and curating IDEA strategies as well as the development, implementation, and management of related training and education programs
  • Accustomed to working across a large organization, coordinating and synergizing efforts with multiple stakeholders and driving institutional change
  • Experience in project design and coordination focused on marginalized populations’ support and/or academic development, ideally both
  • Several years’ experience developing and mentoring a high-performance team to execute and propel strategies forward
  • The capacity to work effectively with external communities, such as government agencies and faith-based constituencies

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Highly demanding environment which requires constant scanning for issues and challenges against multiple priorities and demands on limited resources
  • Moderate to high levels of stress that may result from dealing with emergencies, personnel issues, negotiating and liaising with multiple deadlines and demands
  • Position is performed in a standard university office environment and work situation
  • Significant workload involving complex issues, requiring decisions critical to the institution
  • Work outside of regular business hours
