Community Chapel - Toby Mak

Toby and his wife Loretta were born and raised in Toronto. Having met as volunteers at an inner-city youth summer camp, the stage was set not only for their friendship but also for two lives dedicated to serving God in His mission for the world. Loretta, encouraged early on by her mother to consider missions as a vocation, set out as a young person serving in cross-cultural missions in Morocco and Niger. With Mother Teresa as her model, her desire to love God through loving people lead her to complete a degree in nursing. Toby was, in turn, significantly encouraged by the prayer and fervor of Loretta for missions. This lead to short term missions trips to South America as well as South Africa. Most recently Toby completed a Master of Divinity in Vancouver while Loretta sharpened her skills as a nurse working in both the emergency room and the intensive care unit.
In the summer of 2009, sensing God’s call on their lives to serve with Wycliffe, Loretta left her full time position and together with Toby studied linguistics in a two month intensive program. Since then their lives have been no less than exciting. In a matter of months moving back to Toronto, becoming Wycliffe members and expecting their first child, they have also accepted roles to further the work of Bible translation in Tanzania. Toby will serve as a language intern in a diverse and dynamic branch which is exploring new and innovative approaches to Bible translation. Loretta will continue to serve in the area of healthcare as well as literacy. We are delighted to have Loretta and Toby as members of Wycliffe Bible Translators and encourage you to prayerfully consider partnering with them in the work God has called them to do.
