Thanatology is the study of grief, bereavement, death and dying. Thanatologists explore the grieving process, cultural, gender and social attitudes towards death, the place of ritual and memorialization, ethical issues surrounding death and the biblical and spiritual resources available as we face death and grieve our losses.
MDiv, MTS and Graduate Diploma students may use their elective courses to complete a four-course concentration in Pastoral Thanatology. The Pastoral Thanatology concentration will be available begining Fall 2019.
- Introduction to Pastoral /Spiritual Care of the Dying and Grieving
- Disenfranchised Grief
- Biblical and Spiritual Resources for the Grieving Process
- Cultural and Gender Approaches to Grief
- Grief, Death and Dying in the Family System
- Ethics at the End of Life
In addition there will be an internship component for those who wish to become certified as Thanatologists.
Tyndale's graduates in Pastoral Thanatology will be eligible to be certified by the Canadian Council of Professional Certification (Global) as a Certified Thanatologist Pastoral Specialist (CTPS). This certification requires a minimum of a Master's degree with bible, theology and a minimum of six courses in thanatology plus an internship of 240 hrs.
The Pastoral Thanatology Concentration will be offered in multiple delivery modes such as alternative Fridays in a semester or one-week intensives. Ask about our flexible study options.
