This event is part of the Spiritual Formation Certificate 2021-2022. The Spiritual Formation Certificate offers 7 modules beginning September 18, 2021 running through April 9, 2022. A minimum of 6 modules are required to receive a certificate of completion; however, all 7 are recommended.

About this Module

One of the crucial functions of pastoral ministry and the life of the church is the preaching of the Word. We are taught in seminary pastors are given the “responsibility to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).

And so, week after week, pastors, diligently following preaching manual and textbook’s guidelines, engage in reading and exegeting the text correctly, doing an in-depth study of the text in the original language, looking through commentaries and dictionaries, praying, meditating, thinking, waiting, writing, editing, and sharing from the pulpit the message that will equip God’s people. Months and years go by, but there appears to be little to no growth or transformation in their lives.

According to Paul, transformation in the Christian life is not optional: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Ro. 12:2). And change comes by the power and work of the Holy Spirit, when choices are made. Preaching, therefore, must invite listeners to make a decision if spiritual formation is to occur. The goal of this module is to explore together what it means to preach for formation and transformation, and see God’s people awakening to their desire for God, and growing in their intimacy with Him.

Among the topics we will cover are:

  • The pastor’s formation
  • The spiritual life of the pastor
  • The formational pastor
  • Preaching for formation
  • The Word preached as space where listeners can encounter God
  • Seeing as God sees, etc.

I pray we can learn and grow together as we explore this topic.
