Introduction to influential American writers of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries up to the Civil War shaping the direction of American letters, including Edwards, Hawthorne, Melville, Whitman, Emerson and Dickinson. Prerequisites: 6 credit hours in ENGL. Exclusion: ENGL 281.
