Music History and Appreciation

Explores many of the ways that music engages us. Students are encouraged to develop awareness of musical textures, sonority, rhythm, melody, harmony and how these textures invite the listener into the world of the musical work. Students will be offered an introduction to the study of various forms of vocal and instrumental music from various cultures throughout the world. The course will provide an overview of the music of the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, Indonesia and the Pacific within the context of transnationalism and globalization. Course content will include the study of religious practices throughout various world cultures and explore some of the ways these music forms portray the passions and the drama of the human story. Exclusion: MUSC 102.
