Family Systems & Their Ability to Cope with Death (Module 5 of 6)

This module will explore the impact of death and loss upon the family system. You will learn about death and the family life cycle, looking at how family members react individually to loss and collectively as a family. A special emphasis will focus on how children understand death and express their grief.

Learning Objective

  • Understand the systemic perspective of the family and how the impact of death can affect individuals and the system as a whole
  • Describe the different ways families respond to death and loss
  • Integrate the systemic understanding of death and loss in helping children grieve
  • Apply the knowledge of grief and the family into the context of church ministry and community

Dr. Lyndsay Thompson

DMin, MDiv, RP, CFP

Lyndsay is an instructor at Tyndale Seminary in both the Clinical Counselling and Thanatology programs, and she also teaches in the Doctor of Ministry program. She is a Registered Psychotherapist whose clinical work focuses on children, families, and individual adults. Lyndsay completed her Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Formation, where her research explored the use of imagination, narrative, and somatic experiencing as pathways for spiritual growth.
