HOPE AB55 | Additional Qualification Course
Course Description
The Senior English Additional Basic Qualification course is designed for educators who seek to expand their qualifications to teach English at the senior division (Grades 11–12) within the Ontario curriculum. Grounded in current pedagogy, curriculum policy, and assessment practices, this course deepens candidates’ knowledge of English language, literature, and communication while emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and cultural relevance.
Candidates will explore strategies to support diverse learners in developing literacy, analytical, and communication skills essential for success in the senior grades. Emphasis is placed on designing engaging, Universal Design for Learning strategies; fostering critical and creative inquiry; integrating technology to enhance learning; and assessing and evaluating student achievement in alignment with Growing Success and the Ontario Secondary English curriculum (www.edu.gov.on.ca.).
Through inquiry, collaboration, and reflective practice, candidates will examine contemporary issues in English education, including Indigenous perspectives, equity and inclusivity, representation in literature, and the role of media and multimodal texts. By the end of the course, educators will be prepared to create rich, responsive, and supportive learning environments that enable senior students to think critically, communicate effectively, and connect meaningfully with texts in a variety of forms.
