Course Description
The Reading, Part 1 (Focus on Foundational Literacy Skills) Additional Qualifications course enables candidates to deepen their professional practice through a focus on curriculum knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and the learning environment. The course explores current theories, research, and instructional practices for teaching readers and developing a comprehensive literacy program that meets the needs of all students. It provides candidates with opportunities to enhance their practices, skills, and knowledge to teach foundational literacy skills (e.g., phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, etc.) for beginning readers and older, striving readers. Recommendations from Ontario’s OHRC Right to Read Inquiry Report will be addressed, as will current issues related to literacy instruction (e.g., equity in assessment, supporting multilingual learners, explicit and systematic approaches to instruction, etc.). Current Ontario curriculum and policy documents will be reviewed.
Delivery Format
Asynchronous Online — Instructors and students engage in the course content at different times and from different locations. Attendance at a specific time or location is not required.

Yvonne Messenger Instructor
Yvonne Messenger is a teacher-researcher with over twenty years of teaching and leadership experience in public education in Canada. Certified to teach Kindergarten to Grade 10, most of her classroom teaching experience has been in the Early Years (K to Grade 3), in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
