Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change.
Opportunity Description:
The Start2Finish Running & Reading Club is a dynamic after-school program that is currently operating within multiple inner city schools and servicing hundreds of children across Canada. The Running & Reading Clubs equip economically challenged children by addressing literacy, physical activity, and self-confidence. The program is comprised of a fitness and health component, which culminates in a 5K Running & Reading Challenge, which takes place at York U, a nutritious snack, and a reading component that increases children’s love of reading, positively impacting their literacy skills. Some volunteer responsibilities include: - Being a positive role model for the children, demonstrating maturity, care, enthusiasm, and always leading by example. - Reading with children one-on-one, listening, guiding, and encouraging them. - Coaching, encouraging and participating with the children in the running, fitness activities, and games. - Helping students to record fitness and reading accomplishments in their journals.
Additional Information:
Volunteers will receive an orientation, resource manual and ongoing support from onsite Running & Reading Club directors. A willingness to mentor elementary-aged children while engaging in the Start2Finish Running & Reading curriculum in collaboration with other club coaches.
