The Tyndale Community mourns the loss of the Honourable Jake Epp, former Chancellor of Tyndale University, who passed away on July 5th at the age of 85.
The son of a Mennonite preacher, Mr. Epp graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1961 and went on to become a teacher. In 1972 he was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Provencher marking the beginning of a distinguished career in public service that spanned more than two decades.
Throughout his life, Mr. Epp demonstrated a deep commitment to serving both his community and his country. He held several key cabinet positions, including Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development; Minister of National Health and Welfare; and Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources. His many leadership roles reflected a lifelong dedication to the public good and to improving the lives of others.
Jake was a man of deep faith and unwavering devotion to his family.
Mr. Epp retired from Parliament in 1993, yet continued in service and leadership both in the non-profit and private sectors. In 2005, at what Dr. Brian Stiller, Tyndale’s President at the time, noted was a “very important time in Tyndale’s development,” Jake Epp was appointed Chancellor of Tyndale University, a role he served with distinction for four years. His extensive leadership experience, deep commitment to academic excellence, and steadfast faith provided a strong and inspiring foundation for the university during his tenure.
Mr. Epp received numerous awards and recognition throughout his life, reflecting his exceptional public service and leadership. These included the Manitoba Centennial Medal, the Canadian 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Trinity Western University. In 2010, his lifelong dedication was further recognized with one of Canada’s highest civilian honors: his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Jake was a man of deep faith and unwavering devotion to his family. He leaves behind a profound legacy of service, principled leadership, and a lifelong commitment to helping others. He will be remembered with deep respect, great admiration and profound gratitude by all who had the privilege to know and work with him.
