Library Circulation Technician (Full -Time)

Position Purpose

The Library Circulation Technician ensures that the circulation services (including but not limited to circulation of library materials, maintenance of user accounts, recording of statistics, accounting/reconciliation of payments and supervision of student workers) of Tyndale Library are provided in an efficient and seamless manner, serving the needs of the Library users/customers/ patrons. The Technician provides interlibrary loan services to users both at Tyndale Library and from other institutions. The Technician also provides materials to distance education students, and endeavors to make library materials more readily accessible to the Tyndale community.

Primary Responsibilities

Circulation Desk Service

  • Supervise the circulation of library materials by verifying that all sign outs are within subject limit, organize and update the shelving of on-hold items.
  • Handle users’ circulation requests.
  • Maintain accurate user accounts.
  • Set up and maintain the Reserve collection.
  • Send notices regarding overdue materials and fines.
  • Answer basic reference questions.
  • Manage the routing of periodicals to faculty.
  • Charge and process fines.
  • Advise patrons of relevant Library rules.
  • Order circulation service related supplies.
  • Manage the retrieval from closed stacks.
  • Maintain an environment of professionalism and excellence in customer service.

Maintenance and Updating of Records/Reports

  • Compile circulation statistics, as requested.
  • Generate reports in OCLC WorldShare Management Services.
  • Account/reconcile payments received.
  • Update circulation forms and handbooks (Handbook of Procedures for Student Workers and Procedures for Circulation Technician).

Circulation Desk Coverage

  • Create and manage the Circulation Desk schedule for both the Main Library and the ABBA Resource Centre
  • Provide assistance to the Public Services Librarian in the supervision of Student Library Assistants.

General Library Assistance

  • Participate in taking inventory of the collection during the summer semester.
  • Assist in Library projects, as needed.
  • Provide clerical assistance, as required.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

  • Process users’ requests, either from Tyndale Library users or from other institutions, by searching for items through OCLC or Amicus databases and keeping accurate records for statistics and communicating with other libraries across North America. Use RACER and RELAIS to request materials from other Canadian academic libraries.
  • Determine most efficient and cost effective source to request loan of needed library materials.
  • Package and invoice items for ILL and document delivery.
  • Communicate with and send library materials to Tyndale Distance Education and Doctor of Ministry students according to Library policies.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • College Library and Information Technician Diploma and a Bachelor’s degree /or
  • a Bachelor’s degree with three years experience working in libraries
  • Knowledge of theological/Biblical studies, preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ relevant experience in an academic setting
  • Supervisory experience, preferred
  • Experience with WorldShare Management Services or another integrated library system, preferred
  • Knowledge of interlibrary loans, preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to adjust to ongoing technological changes in an atmosphere of continuing automation
  • Ability to work accurately with details at a fair rate of speed and keep an automated circulation system functioning effectively
  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, and a willingness to be trained in the use of specialized library software
  • Demonstrated good customer service skills
  • Good interpersonal skills in order to relate well with patrons, co-workers and student workers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Moderate physical effort, e.g. pushing book carts, lifting piles of heavy books (up to 10 kg)
  • Must be available to work outside regular business hours
  • Office space is in a public area with regular distractions
  • Visual and mental concentration required
  • Working with standard office equipment (computers, photocopiers, etc.)

  • Satisfied customers with few customer complaints.

Salary Range

$38,000 to $47,000
