Biography

Dr. Scott is Associate Professor of Christian Ministries and Director of Modular Programs having previously served as Vice-President and Academic Dean. While Dean, he led the introduction of 8 Honours Bachelor of Arts programs, as well as the creation of the Bachelor of Education program certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. He was instrumental in negotiating new partnerships with Wycliffe Bible Translators (BA Linguistics), the Pentecostal Assemblies of Newfoundland and Labrador (BA BSTH Pentecostal), InterCordia (semester abroad), and Canadian Baptist Ministries (Route program) as well renegotiating Tyndale's conjoint degree programs in Early Childhood Education and Social Service work with Seneca College. Under his tenure as Dean, Tyndale was ranked number one for student satisfaction in the university issue of Maclean’s magazine.

Prior to joining the faculty at Tyndale, Dr. Scott's adventurous spirit took him to the Peoples Republic of China where he taught English as a Second Languge and Western Culture to academics at Shanxi Educational College (now part of Shanxi University) and then at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He joined the leadership team at the Shanghai International Fellowship. Upon returning to Canada in 1989 after the Tienanmen crisis, he served on the pastoral staff at Knox Presbyterian Church in Toronto working with students at the University of Toronto.

At the same time as he began teaching at Tyndale, (Rev) Dr. Scott was also called as the Senior Minister to St. John's Presbyterian Church in Bradford West Gwillimbury, ON. At St John’s, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2019, Dr. Scott led the construction of a brand-new church facility (2004), with plans for an 8,000 sq ft  addition underway. His leadership has been instrumental in connecting the church to the wider community, including through special-needs summer camps, a twinning project between local schools and First Nations schools, a founder of the Bradford Ministerial, as a Timbits hockey and soccer coach and by integrating local community groups into the life of the church.

In 2018, The Elden of Bradford opened in partnership with St. John’s Presbyterian Church to create a $54-million, 152-unit retirement home in response to significant lack of housing options for seniors in Bradford West Gwillimbury. During the pandemic, The Elden offered transitional support to Southlake Hospital. In the fall of 2022, a new partnership expects to break ground on a separate, new 48-unit memory-care building on additional land owned by St. John's.

Dr. Scott was elected and served as the Moderator of the 146th General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church in Canada (2021) and represented the church nationally and internationally the following year. He has served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Oak Ridges, as Ecumenical Observer on behalf of The Presbyterian Church in Canada to the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s Council of Presidents, as the Presbyterian representative on the Bereavement Authority of Ontario’s Faith-based Advisory Committee and in various other committee roles including serving on the founding Stewards by Design team of the PCC.

Dr. Scott also took on the role of Managing Director of Save the Mothers (2001-2006), a maternal health organization offering a Master of Public Health Leadership degree at Uganda Christian University. He led the incorporation of the organization with charitable status in Canada, East Africa, and the US. He participated in the founding of the Canadian Network for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (funded by the Government of Canada) and secured significant funding for projects to improve African hospitals as part of the Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
